The Bug Lantern is a bespoke piece of research-grade equipment designed as a collaboration between Cootworx and Invertebrates Australia. This lantern has been designed specifically to attract moths, and will allow you to catch, observe and release moths in your garden. This piece of equipment is being used for the Bogong Watch project, and having your own trap will help you to participate in looking out for tagged Bogong moths, but it can also be used all year around to look for other critters in your backyard.
To operate the trap you will need a light, and either a net trap or box trap attachment - these can be purchased separately, or as a combo.
The light has the options for attaching to two different trap designs.
(1) The box trap, which includes a light aluminium funnel which attaches to a sturdy box, allowing you to set your trap on the ground (this also comes with a hanging attachment).
(2) The net trap, which uses a light net which can be hung up, and which lets you see moths in the net as they come in.
You can choose to purchase the light only ($199) or the combo package (including light, box trap and net trap - $299).
